Brave new world… The culmination of several years’
planning and building work, the new
two million pounds Team Valley Trading Estate at Gateshead. Is completed and
ready for business in 1938. The centrepiece is a TWO-MILE-LONG boulevard – Kingsway,
and proudly serving customers from a brand-new building is Martins,
the first bank there, and conveniently situated next door to the post office.

Being first doesn’t last
long, and the following year Barclays sets up business in an identical
looking building over the road!
Martins’ Team Valley Estate Branch features both in the original 1964
Martins publication “Starting a Business in Britain” and its 1967 reprint,
showing this aerial view of the trading estate.
