It really
is a shame that photographs of several of Martins Bank’s key London branches
are missing – Baker Street, Holborn, 25 Soho Square and 11 Waterloo Place,
otherwise known as Pall Mall branch.
Martins kept a huge stock of branch photos, some are of the tiniest
sub branches in some of the remotest parts of England and Wales, so it does
remain a mystery that shots of some of London City outlets have still to be
found. Thankfully, when Dave Baldwin went out to collect a contempory view
for us, he found that the building actually carries its own address label –
11 Waterloo Place!

In the aftermath
of World War II, Waterloo Place/Pall Mall is part of a strategic placement
of new branches in areas of high net wealth, a deliberate policy to attract
good credit balances and business for the Income Tax and trustee
Departments. The doors are opened in
August 1947. In its early years Waterloo Place Branch is home to the London
City Income Tax Department of Martins Bank, as well as being a full Branch
of the Bank. A number of training courses are run from the Branch building.
Waterloo Place opens for six days each week and provides Nightsafe
facilities to local traders.

We
imagine however, the majority customers to be “the wealthy” of the area.
Whilst the branch itself cannot yet be seen here, we do have a number of
staff images in our gallery. If you can help with images of this or any of
Martins 1000+ branch buildings, please do get in touch with us at the usual
address: - martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com.
