Bank of Liverpool

Cark in Cartmel is another of Martins Bank’s tinier sub branches, which is opened in 1920 by the Bank of Liverpool and Martins at 114 Station road. Our friends at the Cartmel Peninsula History society tell us that James Keith, a retired butcher of Cark, paid £750 for two houses : 114 & 116 Station Road known as Fair View and Green View. He later sold Green View to the Bank. The branch can be found on this lovely period photograph from the Sankey Collection – the pair of houses more or less in the centre of the picture are 114 and 116 Station Road.

Sadly, we have been unable to find a photo that shows the Bank name above the door and if you can help, we would be delighted to hear from you at the usual address – martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com.

We were delighted to be contacted by Cark resident, and member of the Local history Society, Jeff Appleyard, who provided us with this comtemporary image of 114 Station Road. In the black and white image above, it is just possible to make out the railings that straddle the first floor frontage of each house.
