Right
at the heart of the local Auction Mart and opened in 1954, is another of
Martins Bank’s functional garden shed arrangements that operates as a
sub-Branch to Morpeth. It beggars belief to think that it was ever safe to allow thousands of
pounds of ready cash to be paid in and out of one singularly unsafe wooden
box for eight hours a week, but
cattle markets around the country provide good banking business for
Martins Bank right up to the 1980s, some even lasting until the second
decade of the twenty-first century. The special on-site sub-Branches
usually open to suit the hours of trading of the host location. Morpeth Auction Mart sub-Branch is closed
in 1980.
