Shock of the new… Within the space of five months, Martins
Bank opens TWO new
branches in Coventry: One at Warwick Road and the other at Cheylesmore on the
Daventry Road. Warwick Road starts
life immediately as the main branch in the city, the former holder of that
title – High Street – being downgraded to sub-Branch status. Warwick Road
epitomises 1960s architecture, and is in complete contrast to the original
branch in the older part of the City.
In spite of the radical exterior views, the interior of the branch
lives up to Martins’ tradition of a bright and welcoming banking hall. |

It is also good to
see that bandit screens are not yet needed, as the arrival of these will do
much to remove the personal touch of branch banking. Martins’ expansion into the Midlands,
which began as early as 1935 with Birmingham City Office shows no sign of
stopping in 1966. News of the merger
with Barclays is still just around the corner… |

Advertisements like this were taken
out in the local newspapers on Monday 21 Mar 1966 – the day the branch was
opened – to give maximum coverage of the event. At this time there was no
commercial radio, and Banks were not yet allowed to advertise on
television! Image © Martins Bank
