The
Co-op’s got Bananas? The Autobiography of Hunter Davies OBE, author journalist and broadcaster, seems at first glance to be an unlikely link with Martins Bank, yet it contains a reference to Stanwix, one of two sub branches to Carlisle that are opened between 1926 and 1928. The other, at Dalston closes in 1940 and even Stanwix itself goes in 1958 - well before the 1969 merger of Martins with Barclays. Stanwix sub-Branch is situated one mile due North of the City Centre on Scotland Road. |

It is one of a small parade
of shops and businesses known (quite appropriately) as Stanwix Bank. The only listing of opening hours that we
can find for this branch is from 1929, when Stanwix is available for just
half an hour each week on a Friday!
Despite this, the axe doesn’t fall for another thirty years and
Stanwix closes down at the beginning of December 1958. The only listing of

contacted us having spotted the reference to Stanwix in Hunter Davies’ Book. |
