Broadheath
comes to Martins Bank through the amalgamation with the Lancashire and
Yorkshire bank in 1928. Prior to
this the branch is part of the Mercantile Bank of Lancashire, which between
the time of its foundation in 1890, and its amalgamation with the
Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank in 1904, builds up a valuable and extensive
business in the cotton towns of the North West. In just fourteen years, the Mercantile
Bank’s empire grows to nine Manchester Branches, a further twenty-two in
Lancashire and Cheshire, and six more on the Isle of Man. Broadheath branch
survives subsequent mergers to become part of Martins, and then as Barclays
- for almost thirty-one years - closing in April 2000. As with many of these older branches, we
have little information about the Martins staff of the 1950s and 60s who
worked there. If you can help with
memories or images, please do get in with us by clicking HERE.
