Pelton is one of a clutch of
branches that is lost from Martins Bank’s Network towards the end of the
1950s. This is a period of consolidation
for the Bank, and with thoughts of a second wave of southward expansion,
branches are examined for their profitability and either refurbished,
rebuilt, or closed down. Social change is already
happening with Harold MacMillan’s “never had it so good generation” about to
hurtle headlong into the swinging 60s.

Martins will need to move with
the times if it is to get its hands on some of that disposable income. The Bank of Liverpool and Martins opens
Pelton in 1919. The few details we
have, from a local directory dated 1924, show the branch open on Saturdays,
but there is no mention of weekday opening.
As and when we find out more, we will amend the details shown below. We have no image of the
branch, so if you can help, please do get in touch with us at the usual
address: martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com. |
