North Eastern Banking Company

Martins Bank’s Branch at Amble has a large number of sub branches, and a fairly diverse bunch they are too – ACKLINGTON RAF STATION, WARKWORTH, ACKLINGTON AUCTION MART, and Red Row.  Amble and its dependents come to Martins through the amalgamation in 1914 of the Bank of Liverpool and the North Eastern Banking Company – this is the first and as far as we know the only successful attempt to create a national bank with a headquarters situated OUTSIDE London.  The alternative is something that the North Eastern bank does not want to entertain, as the preservation of LOCAL banking and the interests of local banks and their customers is of paramount importance to its directors.
