This property is what the estate agents refer to as “deceptively
spcaious”, and for eleven years, 19 High Street Lingdale operates as a
sub-branch first of Martins Bank and later Barclays. Lingdale opens in 1968
as a sub-branch to Guisborough, and is perhaps the newest and last example of
Martins’ trend in “front room banking”. Don’t be fooled by the lacklustre
exterior, the Bank’s architects have “gone to town” on the inside, and it’s
really good to see that a branch opened as late in Martins’ existence as this
one, survives the merger by more than ten years! We can’t help but wonder if
the current owners are aware that their front room was once open to the
public on Tuesdays and Fridays! Being open for just a couple of hours, two
days a week has been reason enough to close sub-Branches in other parts of
the country, yet this tiny office in the North East of Yorkshire is strong
enough to survive the merger of Martins and Barclays Banks, and remains open
almost until the last moments of the 1970s. |
