Ovenden is listed as an
agency of the Halifax Commercial Bank as early as 1893. The Halifax Commercial merges with the Bank
of Liverpool and Martins in 1920. In
Martins’ time Ovenden is a sub branch to No 16 Silver Street Halifax, and
remains open until 1942 when the pressures of War on staffing levels makes it
necessary to close or mothball a number of smaller branches. This is also the end of an era for a small
group of tiny sub branches to Halifax, with the closure of RIPPONDEN on 25
July 1942, and Ovenden on the same day as each other, 31 August 1942. |
