The genteel Northern town of Harrogate has a very brief encounter with TWO branches of Martins Bank. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank opened a
branch at Prospect Crescent in 1920, and wins out over the former Halifax Equitable
Bank Branch in Oxford Street, when the Lancashire and Yorkshire amalgamates
with the Bank of Liverpool and Martins in 1928, to form Martins Bank
Limited. The business at Oxford Street will be transferred to Prospect Crescent
before the year is out. It is
interesting to note the Equitable Bank’s full name in the Phone Book entry
above – shortened to the Equitable Bank, in its longest form it was known as
The Halifax Equitable Benfit Building Society before being changed into the
