The
presence of Martins Bank in the Staffordshire town of Leek dates back to 1928
when a branch there is acquired from the merger of the Bank of Liverpool and
Martins with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank. It is this origin that places Leek within
the Bank’s Manchester district. In 1960 sub-Branches of both Martins and
Barclays opened at Leek’s Cattle Market at Barnfields. Martins opens for business for four hours
each Wednesday. When Barclays takes
over, there is room and need only for one sub-Branch, so the Martins office
closes early in 1970.
