When Martins Bank Staindrop opens as a sub-Branch to
Barnard Castle in March 1928 it is a comparitive late-comer. There are
already three more - at BUTTERKNOWLE, COCKFIELD and GAINFORD – and these were
opened by the Bank of Liverpool and Martins between 1923 and 1925. Gainford
and Staindrop open on Tuesdays, and Cockfield and Butterknowle open on
Fridays. The demands on the staff of
most British companies to join the War Effort means that Staindrop is amongst
the numer of the Bank’s smaller Branches that are “rested” for the duration
of the Second World War, by being shut down. Staindrop lasts until the time
of the merger with Barclays, who already have a sub branch nearby and
therefore do not need to keep two open.
