The period from 1893
to 1909, sees some fifty branches and sub
branches opened in what is a prolific period of expansion for the North
Eastern Banking Company. This growth continues almost to the point of merger
with the Bank of Liverpool and Martins in 1914. Both banks have been looking to merge with
another in order to increase in size and influence, and both have looked
beyond their own areas to the banks of the south. By joining together in the
North of England without the need either for a large London bank’s
involvement or influence, the seeds of Martins’ unique position as a national
bank with a head office OUTSIDE London are sown. |
