 Just who IS in charge?
 In 1920, the Bank of
Liverpool and Martins opens a sub branch at College Road Hextable, under the
control of their BROMLEY office. The following year, the parent Branch is
changed to SIDCUP and the next year it is changed again to SWANLEY, which remains in charge of Hextable until its
closure in 1972. At this time the Bank of Liverpool and Martins does open and
close a number of sub-Branches in Kent. There is little evidence to explain WHY the care of this little sub-Branch seems to have
been passed from pillar to post quite so much in its early years. |

   Although many branches are
closed at the time of, or just before the 1969 merger of Martins Bank with
Barclays, there is also a period of adjustment into the early seventies, when
Barclays has to decide the economic benefits of keeping or closing certain
outlets. That Hextable only opens for two hours each Monday and Thursday is a
good indication that it may well cost too much to keep open, and Barclays is
of course already well represented in this part of Kent.
