This is a rarely seen image
of the former Head Office of the Bank of Liverpool, at 7 Water Street
Liverpool. The image below right, which is equally rare shows the banking
  hall circa 1930.
As both Head Office and City
Branch, this building provides the first home to the Bank of Liverpool
itself. Then briefly - from 1928 to 1932 – it becomes Head Office of Martins
Bank, and Liverpool City Office Branch. The move for both is but a short distance
to the spectacular new premises at 4 Water Street.

 This extract from Slater’s
Directory of Liverpool 1847 actually lists the Bank of Liverpool’s address as
FIVE (not seven) Water Street. The Manager, Mr Joseph Langton is actually the
first Manager of the Bank of Liverpool.
He served at 7 Water Street from the creation of the Bank in 1831
  until 1855.
 In recognition, a portrait
of him was commissioned, and this was hung in both Head Office buildings. You
can read more about the Bank of Liverpool in our feature about the CONSTITUENT BANKS that form the modern day Martins Bank. |
