Martins Bank’s Branches in East Anglia are very special to the Bank, because
they represent Martins in an area almost completely dominated by Barclays,
whose branch network in the East is a saturation comparable with that
of Martins across the North of England.
The fifteen miles between and including King’s Lynn and Hunstanton for
example, includes ten branches of Barclays, whilst Martins has just
one branch at King’s Lynn. |

In fact at this time - when to most
people East Anglia refers simply to the counties of Norfolk Suffolk and Essex
– Martins Bank has little more than a handful of outposts, four in Norfolk
and one each in Suffolk and Essex. Norwich Cattle Market sub-Branch has
had a fairly short life – it opens in 1960, and is one of the first to go –
on 28 February 1969, in fact – as part of removing “branch duplication” ahead
of the merger with Barclays. In the
north of England Martins Bank has a large number of sub-Branches at cattle
markets, which are more commonly referred to as “auction marts”, but Norwich
Cattle Market is the Bank’s only such
outlet in East Anglia. If you have memories or
