Wanted – an unusual looking
building on the Wirral. Found –
Martins Bank Helsby. Despite being nearer
to places such as Ellesmere Port and Warrington, Helsby is actually a self
accounting sub-Branch to Chester.
Opened by the Bank of Liverpool and Martins
Limited in July 1922 as a full branch,
and with its own manager until 1934, Martins Bank Helsby operates under a
Clerk in Charge, and remits its daily work to the clearings. Image © Martins Bank

Most decisions on lending
must be referred to the Managers at Chester for approval.Helsby Branch
operates a full six day banking week, suggesting a fairly high daily flow of
customer transactions. Mr G F Hughes (of whom we are still seeking a photo)
serves as Clerk in Charge from 1946 to 1969. |
