The Southwards expansion of Martins Bank continues through the 1960s, and in 1964 produces
another showpiece branch in Birmingham.
The new office at Edgbaston is one of the earliest to feature a new
and much bolder standard font for signage, and the building chosen –
Radclyffe House - is a clear statement of 60s design, and similar in many
ways to Martins’ rebuilt branch at PRESTON
FISHERGATE.

Sadly, there are no visits
to the new Branch by Martins Bank Magazine, but there are these few precious
photographs of the building in the Barclays collection of Martins Bank
photographs, including some post-merger comparisons below. Radcliffe house
serves Barclays until June 1986.

This is a rare chance to see a Branch from a shorter time
perspective than our usual “then and now” feature. Radclyffe house is seen
here both inside and out in 1964, and in 1976, some twelve years after
being opened, with ten years remaining under new owners Barclays. This
advertisement (right) appears in the Birmingham Daily Post a week before
the opening of Edgbaston Branch and the transfer of business of Five Ways.
Martins Bank Archive has re-mastered it from a poor quality copy of the
original.
