The Bank of Liverpool
and Martins opens a branch at Ormskirk in 1922. Martins Bank opens a self accounting
sub-Branch at Skelmersdale in 1963. Ormskirk survives the merger with
Barclays, remaining open for a couple of years until being closed in
1972. For our feature, we have
another retirement write-up from Martins Bank Magazine; this time it is the
turn of Mr Roscoe, who at the time of his retirement in 1961 has been manager
at Ormskirk for fiteen years… Bob
bows out… At the end of May, Bob Roscoe retired after service which commenced in Parr's Bank, Ormskirk in 1916. He decided to move across the street (figuratively speaking) in 1920 and after service at
Waterloo and Aintree he went to Ormskirk in 1925. Further service followed at Bootle, Birkdale, on H.O.
Relief and at Aintree again before his appointment as Manager at Ormskirk in 1946. Highly respected and
known everywhere in the town, Mr. Roscoe
has been prominently identified with
the Ormskirk Amateur Operatic Society for many years and his work for
the Boy Scout Movement in Ormskirk as Scoutmaster and District Commissioner has been recognised by Imperial Headquarters who have conferred upon him first
the Medal of Merit and then the coveted Silver Acorn. |

On
May 30TH
there was a gathering of his friends at
the branch to witness the presentation by Mr. I. Buchanan, Liverpool Assistant
District Manager, on their behalf of a tea
trolley and a cheque. Mrs. Roscoe
was presented with a bouquet by Miss Barbara
Clark, who accompanied the gift with a short appreciative speech. A feature of the generous 'spread'
which preceded the presentation was a cake,
beautifully iced by Mrs. Roscoe and
decorated with the coat of arms of the Bank. In
his speech Mr. Buchanan made special reference to Mr. Roscoe's public work and to his interest in
work among young people
and it was very typical of
Mr. Roscoe that, in his reply, he was most anxious that everyone should appreciate all
that Mrs. Roscoe had
done to help him in his career. |
