Crumpsall is a new sub
branch, opened by Martins Bank in 1961.
It might seem a little surprising to be opening new branches in Manchester
at this time, when the city already has so many thanks to the amalgamation
with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank some three decades earlier. It might be that there is an economic case
for opening up shop here, but Martins is also known for having a certain
“knee-jerk reaction” either to the presence of rivals or of the potential
custom from new businesses setting up in the area.

Examples of the latter
include KEW BRIDGE
and BRIERLEY HILL
where the Bank perceives benefits in providing banking services for large
companies. Rumour has it that Martins chose EPSOM for its second drive-in Branch simply because the
wife of a Martins Bank Director who lived locally didn’t have a branch of
Martins at which to cash her cheques and had to use Barclays! So, whether or not the Bank chooses to
site its new branch to attract customers from the local Co-operative Movement
(The manufacture of Co-op biscuits is big in Crumpsall) or from the three major local hospitals, Crumpsall
gets a Branch, which lasts for just ten years, closing in June 1971, a year
and a half after the merger with Barclays…
