Martins Bank opens a branch at 140
High street Oxford on 21 March 1938, but has already agreed to purchase the only
Branch in the City belonging to Messrs Glyn Mills and Co, situated in very
grand premises at Marygold House, Carfax.
It will however take some time to move into the former Glyn’s Branch,
especially with World War 2 in the way. Martins finally achieves its place
amongst the dreaming spires in 1942 – more than four years after first
arriving in the City – and Head Office Circular No E717(M) issued 28 July
1942, informs the staff of the acquisition of the Branch and Business of
Messrs Glyn and Company at Carfax. So
begins an association with that extraordinary building, which will outlast
Martins, and be run by Barclays until 1985… |
