Martins Bank’s sub-Branch at
Wrexham
Cattle Market opens in 1959 in this wonderfully quirky building complete with
its corrugated roof. Unfortunately, this is the only photograph of the
Branch, so we can’t tell what the nearby buildings look like. Redolent more of a public convenience than
the Branch of a Bank, Martins’ customers
can use it for just three hours on a Monday, which we will assume to be
cattle trading day. Many of Martins
Bank’s Cattle Market (also known as Auction Mart) Branches survive the merger
with Barclays, and some of them even remain open into the early part of the
Twenty-First Century. Wrexham Cattle Market is not quite so lucky, being kept
open as a Branch of Barclays only until 1975.
