In 1962, the latest town to join
Martins Bank’s network of Cattle Market and Auction Mart branches is
Ulverston, a Lancashire town whose banking history dates back to the mid
1700s, and the services of Messrs Petty and Postlethwaite. Looking
more like one of a neat row of semi-detached prefabricated dwellings than a
bank, this sub-Branch has a fine utility front door with the number 18 marked
out in screw-on letters. Oh the luxury and expense… … and with a public
telephone available NEXT DOOR, (“…hold the line caller, and press Button A”),
these are indeed such modern times! |
