Then and now, at Henderson’s Buildings… Five years after absorbing Messrs
Wakefield Crewdson’s Kendal Bank, the Bank of Liverpool opens an office at Lazonby
in the wilds of the Northern Lake District. This beautiful part of
England is awash with branch banks, whose main and sub Branches seem to be
located in the smallest and remotest of places! This lovely image shows
Lazonby sub-Branch in 1937, still with its Bank of Liverpool and Martins
window signage, but looking all the world like a small terraced house. This is not a strange at it seems, and many
small offices and agencies of Martins and other banks were actually run from
the front rooms of ordinary houses! Hardly overstated, the branch is small
but functional, with a cashier service is available for two hours a week, and
for extra time when the local Auction Mart is open. Ah, the gentler days of
banking! Below we compare two images of Lazonby;
the photo on the right having been taken at the time of the merger with
Barclays in 1969. Barclaycard is now “welcome here”, and things are about to
change forever… |
