At the time of the Amalgamation of the Bank of Liverpool and Martins with
the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank, which creates the modern day Martins Bank,
each bank has a Cattle market Agency at Wakefield. From the available
records, we believe that the Lancashire and Yorkshire Agency was closed and
merged with that of the Bank of Liverpool and Martins.    |

The Second World War claims a
number of Martins Bank’s branches – not only those that are flattened by
bombing, but also many for which the Bank cannot spare the staff to open them
for only an hour or two each week.  The
original idea is to mothball them until the war is over, but the economic
situation at the end of the conflict dictates which should remain closed, and
Wakefield Cattle Market Branch is one of these, closing down altogether in
  1940. We have
no image of this branch, so if you can help, please do get in touch with us
  at the usual address: martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com.
