The word “cute” simply doesn’t do it justice - This
is Clayton West, and it has to be one of the most charming settings for one of
Martins Bank’s branches that we have yet seen. Note the attention to detail,
even on the chimney pot (right) that gives the building the look of a
lovingly made Lego® brick model! This
image dates from 1937, when the building resembles one of those ornate little
shelters in a park or on a common where nearby a brass band can be heard, and
children are playing ball games and eating ice cream… After the amalgamation of
the West Riding Union Bank with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank in 1902,
Clayton West becomes one of a large number of
Branches situated in Yorkshire, that are actually under the control of
Manchester District. By 1969, although Clayton
West is officially a sub branch to Skelmanthorpe, both branches are under the
control of the Manager of Market Place Huddersfield Branch. Clayton West not
only survives the merger with Barclays, it remains open as one of their
branches until 1988… |
