The map here (right,
reproduced from “Four Centuries of Banking” Vol II © Martins Bank Limited
1968), does not display many of the far western towns and villages of
Northumberland, Woodburn included. We have
therefore highlighted Hexham as the nearest town, but you need to go about
eighteen miles north-west of Hexham (sadly off the edge of this map) to find
even the parent branch at Bellingham. |

Pronounced locally as
“Bellin-jam” it has three sub-branches, Otterburn, Wark and Woodburn, which
come to Martins Bank through the amalgamation of the North Eastern Banking
Company and the Bank of Liverpool in 1914.
The details we have for Woodburn are from the Annual Report and
Accounts of the Bank of Liverpool and Martins Limited, and also Kelly’s
Directory of Northumberland, where the opening hours are recorded as two
hours per week on a Thursday.
Originally intended to have been “mothballed”, this tiny sub-Branch is
closed in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II, but is not re-opened. This is one of several smaller outlets for which an
incomplete address is recorded. We are sorry that we have no image of
Woodburn sub-Branch, and if you can help with pictures or memories of this or
any of Martins Banks 980+ Branch Buildings, please do get in touch with us at
the usual address: martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com. |
