By 1968 Martins’ Branch at Wolverhampton Queens
Square has been open some thirty-two years, and has outgrown itself by dint
of expanding business. The Bank therefore
takes the opportunity to open purpose-built premises, nearer to the town centre in Waterloo Road, which it hopes will serve its
customers for years to come. Indeed,
this new branch is good enough for Barclays, who keep it open well beyond the
merger until 1991, technically giving Martins a fifty-five-year presence in
Wolverhampton. Our thanks go to Keith
Mason for spotting the exterior photo of our Branch on the excellent Facebook
Group Page – Wolverhampton in Old Photographs, and to the group themselves
for allowing us to show it here. The Staff Gallery below includes only those
listed as working at Wolverhampton Waterloo Road from 1968 onwards. More staff can be found on our WOLVERHAMPTON QUEEN SQUARE page. Tastefully restored in its new role as a Solicitors’ Office, only the
upstairs windows give a clue that this was once Martins Bank Waterloo Road… |
