The
Morecambe Guardian of 15 October 1949 provides this story of two members of
the staff of Martins getting married. The article is reproduced here, and
we apologise in advance for the phrase “nigger accessories” which is an
extremely common fashion description at this point in history, and seems to
refer to accessories that accompanied both male and female formalwear.
AUTUMN BRIDES –
Colleagues in Bank
YOUDELL - CARTER
COLLEAGUES on the staff of Martins Bank, Ltd, Euston Road,
Mr Alan Youdell, Elder son of Mrs and the late Mr R Youdell, of Greenfoulds
Ambleside, and Miss Enid Carter, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs H. E. Carter,
of 33 South Road, Morecambe, were married at Morecambe Parish Church, on
Saturday.
Given away by her father, the bride, an Old Grammarian, wore
a ‘new look' gown of dusky pink moss crepe simply cut with pin tucked
bodice, a small roll collar, and full skirt gathered on to a tight
waistband. Her headdress was matching artificial flowers and net, and she
carried a bouquet of shaded roses.
Miss Beryl Carter was the bridesmaid, and she was gowned in
blue taffeta, with matching headdress, and carried a bouquet of pink
carnations.
Mr Brian Smith (friend) was best man, and Mr R Martindale
was groomsman. A reception was held at the Strathmore Hotel, and when the
couple left for their honeymoon which is being spent touring Scotland, the
bride was wearing a donkey brown and pale blue Hebe Sports suit, with nigger
accessories.
