The Equitable Bank opens a branch in Morecambe’s
fashionable West End in 1896, and it comes into the eventual ownership of
Martins Bank through the 1927 merger of the Equitable Bank with the Bank of
Liverpool and Martins. Under Martins,
West End is a self accounting branch with its own sorting code number, but it
is under the control of Morecambe Euston Road. This type of branch usually has a clerk in
charge who has some managerial powers, but is not a full manager. They will sign selected documents and
vouchers as “Pro Manager”. The day’s
work that passes over the counter is dealt with on site. The West End of
Morecambe includes the famous Morecambe Battery, and the legendary Midland
Hotel, whose Art Deco – cake on a sweet trolley - appearance, is a long established and now
fully restored part of the Morecambe skyline. West End survives the 1969
Merger with Barclays, and remains open until the end of 1992. |
