way by further amalgamation into Martins Bank’s North Eastern District, in
1928! King street became one of the oldest Martins

when the business of the branch was moved by Barclays into smaller premises

On the last day of October Mr. and Mrs.
Charlton invited many of their friends in the Bank to be their guests at a
buffet tea held in the Royal Hotel, South Shields, to mark the occasion of
his retirement from the Bank after 43 years' service. About
40 past and present members of his staff and many of Mr. Charlton's old
friends were present and during the course of the party Mr. H. W. Warwick,
Pro Manager at King Street, handed over a cheque representing the
contributions of the subscribers, many of whom were unable to be present. Mr. Warwick spoke in warm terms of the qualities which
had endeared Mr. Charlton to his staff and to his friends and wished him well
on behalf of everybody. Miss Moira Sutton, the senior lady member of his
staff, presented Mrs. Charlton with a bouquet. Mrs. Charlton, as Janet
Greenwell, was herself formerly a member of our staff. Mr. Charlton entered the service in 1914 at Seahouses.
From 1916-19 he served with H.M. Forces, afterwards returning to Sea- houses.
He went to Durham in 1920 and to Newcastle upon Tyne in 1921. He was
appointed Pro Manager at King Street in 1938, Manager at Byker in 1940 and
Manager at King Street in 1946. Mr. and Mrs. Charlton have retired to a
bungalow in Ponteland. |

For our glimpse at the changeover of King street from
Martins to Barclays, we have FOUR images – two exterior shots compare the
1960s and 1970s, whilst two internal views show the counter in the 1970s, and
the banking hall of the early 1980s… |
