The Annual Report and Accounts of the North Eastern Banking
Company, show that the Bank opened an office at South Moor – as a sub-Branch
to Stanley – in 1913, a year or so before the Bank amalgamated with the Bank
of Liverpool. The opening days then
were Monday and Saturday, and these remained the same right up to the time
that South Moor was closed down in 1939. With thanks to www.historicaldirectories.org and

local directory shows details of South Moor sub branch in 1914. During its
own existence, the North Eastern Bank swallowed up the Alnwick and County
Bank and Dale and Company of South Shields, to eventually bring what would be
the largest number of branches to a single district of the modern-day Martins
Bank. As we have mentioned, South Moor
survives until 1939. At this point, a large number of the Bank’s smaller
Branches are mothballed due to the staff shortages cause by the Second World
War. Many of them will not open their
doors again, and South Moor is one of them.
We have no image of the branch, so
