The Bank of Liverpool and Martins Bank opens a branch at Fishburn in 1919.
Even in the 1950s, when this
picture is taken, it looks as if Fishburn has seen better days, but never
fear, this sub branch to Sedgefield will stay open through the 1969 merger
with Barclays, and continue in service until 1992. This is despite only being open for two
hours each week, on a Friday morning – many sub-Branches would have been
deemed not viable with such an arrangement, and indeed many were closed at or
shortly before the merger with Barclays, for that very reason. The North Eastern District
of Martins Bank boasts more branches than any other single district of the
bank, and this is due in no small part to the amalgamations that went into
building the North Eastern Banking Company, which merges with the Bank of
Liverpool in 1914. The resulting
district has nearly 150 Branches as is controlled from the District Office at
22 GREY STREET NEWCASTLE. Indicentally, what appears
at first glance to be a large quantity of damage marks on this photo is
actually a reflection in the windows of the branch, of the roadway and stone
wall opposite. If you know what this
building is used for nowadays, please do get in touch as the usual address – gutinfo@btinternet.com. |
In Service: 1919 until
28 February 1992 Branch
