Ferryhill, along with its
two sub Branches – Chilton and Ferryhill Station comes to Martins Bank
through the amalgamation in 1914, of the Bank of Liverpool and Martins with the
North Eastern Banking Company Limited. As a result of this merger, the North
East of England becomes and remains the largest district of Martins
Bank. Pictured here in 1959, Ferryhill
Station is typical of the large number of “front room” Branches in the Bank’s
portfolio, providing banking services to the local community for three hours
per week. Although quaint, and often appealing
to see dotted around our small towns and villages, these sub-Branches are
never likely to pay their way.
