A choice
of branches… The Halifax Equitable Bank establishes a branch in 1911, at
South Parade, Stainland. At the time of the creation of Martins Bank Limited
in 1928, both the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank AND the Bank of Liverpool and
Martins have their own Branches at Stainland, one at Holroyd Square, the
other at Manor House. Three Branches
of Martins Bank in a small town is not, of course, ideal, and by the end of
1928, South Parade wins out as the Branch best placed to attract business and
to cope with future expansion of local business. In the Branch photograph (right), which dates from the
1940s, opening times are Monday and Friday, 11 to 2. By the time of the Barclays merger in 1969,
hours have been extended over five days, but they do allow for a lunch
break. Smaller sub-Branches sometimes
have these built-in breaks to allow the one cashiering member of staff time
for the toilet and bite to eat. The second member of staff is often known as a “guard” and
does not interact with the Bank’s customers.
Stainland remains open for almost ten more years before being closed
permanently in 1979. |
