In the 1960s, Skipton is the
hub of Martins Bank’s operations in Craven District, and it controls FOUR sub branches including
Cowling, Gargrave and Grassington. In 1926 the Bank of Liverpool and Martins
Limited has opened another new sub-Branch, this time at the Auction Mart in
Skipton. Although the town of Skipton itself has five different banks, at the
Auction Mart there are just two.
Martins Bank’s here Branch
may look humble, but it is practical for purpose, and continues in service
right up to the merger with Barclays.
Not a penny wasted, and not bad at all for what, in anyone’s eyes,
would appear to be not much more than a small potting shed in Yorkshire. In
later years the idea of these small branches looking so neat and compact is
taken up by some banks who actually issue “miniature bank” money boxes to
children!
