new or to refit existing high street branches, with a view to
maximising income in central shopping
areas. “The Housewife” is, in
particular, targetted as a source of new accounts, and the booklet “An
Account at Martins Bank” features on its cover, a woman’s handbag and an
outstretched female hand holding a cheque. |

opens in 1958 in these impressive premises in Market Street. It has a modern
bandit screen free interior and although it does not have self accounting
status, it is nevertheless a busy office, and serves shoppers and local
businesses for a full banking week. |

In 1969, Westhoughton,
sadly, is not one of the Martins branches that Barclays wants, and it is
closed down ahead of the merger. |
