There are many examples in the online archive, of Martins Bank’s “front
room” style sub-Branches, but none of them looks as much like a large town
house, as Whalley, sub to Clitheroe.
Even in close up (above) it is difficult to believe that people
actually walk through that front door to transact banking business. Surely you’d be more likely to see a few
kids playing ball, and perhaps a dog scampering about in the driveway? Whalley makes it through the merger, and in
1975 Barclays finds new premises a little further down King Street. At the time of the merger, Whalley opens
virtually full banking hours across the six day banking week, but many
branches are soon to be given a late opening weekday instead of Saturday
morning, as the banking unions press hard for a five day week.
