Where it all adds up…

What better choice for a new branch than the site of Martins Bank’s Bristol Victoria Street Office – at the headquarters of NCR, the National Cash Register Company, at Transom House. In 1966 NCR will provide much of the computer hardware for Martins’ new London Computer Centre, and has provided statement, ledger and adding machines to the Bank for decades. Many of the Bank’s newer outlets are opened as sub branches to nearby larger offices, and Victoria Street will be run as a self accounting sub branch to Bristol Queen Square.

A self accounting sub branch is usually open every day, and is responsible for processing its own work on the premises, rather than at the parent branch. A clerk in Charge is able to undertake some of the everyday duties of Branch management. To build the new Victoria Street Branch, the Bank takes over the former offices of Duomatic Limited and the architects and shop fitters work their usual magic to bring a brand-new branch of Martins to the city… Inside is the Bank’s familiar mid-sixties layout, still in the days when bandit screens are, thankfully, the exception, rather than the rule…
