Irlam is a branch of the
Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank, for which we have not yet been able to obtain
an opening date. It came to Martins Bank through the amalgamation in 1928, of
the Lancashire and Yorkshire with the Bank of Liverpool and Martins. When first opened Irlam is a sub-Branch
under the control of Cadishead Branch, and their Manager Mr F U
Wilkinson. Martins Bank gives Irlam full branch status in 1966, and
– in 1967 - charge of its own sub branch at HIGHER IRLAM. Both branches will make it through the merger of
Martins and Barclays Banks in 1969, with Higher Irlam remaining open until
1988 and Irlam itself closing a few years later, in 1992.
