MARTINS
BANK SOCIETY OF THE ARTS – MUSIC & DRAMA |
Martins Bank
Society of the Arts is the principal amateur operatic and dramatic society of
the Bank. Under its auspices, there are a number of regional groups that
stage productions and performances in Liverpool, London, and Newcastle. The
Liverpool Daily Post column “Day to Day in Liverpool” heralds the creation of
the new Society of the Arts in February 1945. Between then and 1956 the
Society runs as three separate sections – Music, Arts and Drama. The Arts
Section is concerned mainly with the Annual Display of Arts and Crafts - an
event held at Head Office, which sees creative works of all kinds entered by
members of the Bank’s Staff. From 1957
onwards, the Society of the Arts performs musical productions as Martins Bank
Operatic Society, and plays and comedies are performed by the Bank’s
remaining groups, the Argosy Players, The Cicala Players and The North
Eastern Players. The Manchester Players are recorded as putting on just two
productions, one in 1951, the other in 1954. Both are put on in conjunction
with the Argosy Players, for the benefit of the staff, and are staged in
Liverpool at the Little Theatre in the basement at Head Office. The
Manchester Players productions feature at the end of the Argosy Players
Section. |
