One of the first brand new
post-war sub-branches of the bank is opened at the Victoria Institute, Caton,
in the Summer of 1946. At this time the opening of branches was announced in
the local press, and an advertisement like this one was placed in both the
Lancaster Guardian and its sister paper the Morecambe Guardian. Caton joins HORNBY as the second sub-branch to Lancaster, and the number of
satellite offices grew to FOUR, with the
addition of LANCASTER FARMERS’ AUCTION MART in 1966 and
on campus at LANCASTER UNIVERSITY in
1968. At the start of 2026, some
eighty years after Caton is opened, there are no branches of the bank left at
all either in Lancaster or Morecambe, as “the customer’s preference to use
the internet for their everyday banking needs” re-writes the social history
of our cities, towns and villages.
Caton sub-branch moves to new premises at 1 HORNBY ROAD at the
beginning of October 1966, and remains open to the local people and
businesses until 7 April 2000…
