The Argosy players are so
named after the Telegraphic Address of Head Office – “ARGOSY LIVERPOOL”. The meaning of the word Argosy is a large trading
ship or fleet of ships, and this nautical theme is most appropriate given
the location of Head Office in the port of Liverpool, the logo of the Bank
of Liverpool (shown here above), and of course the many nautical
decorations displayed within the fabric of 4 Water Street itself.
The telegraphic address of Liverpool Overseas branch is “ARGOFOR
LIVERPOOL” and the staff of this department contribute to the activities of
Martins Bank’s society of the Arts, usually with music and comedy, but now
and then they try to emulate their colleagues in the Argosy Players by
putting on the occasional drama.

We have now added details of the twenty-two drama performances
staged by the Argosy Players, who for an amateur group are extremely
accomplished and very well polished. Many of these productions were staged
at Liverpool’s Crane Theatre, and some were put on in the Basement Theatre
at Martins Bank’s Head Office, as short entertainments to staff attending
the annual general meetings of the Society of the Arts. The two productions
credited to the Manchester Players are included below, as they were
staged for the benefit of the Argosy players in the Basement Theatre at
Liverpool Head Office. Don’t forget
that you can read about the other Martins Bank amateur operatic and
dramatic societies in our Song and Dance feature. You can also read about
the extraordinary talents and the career of one of Martins Bank’s most
loyal Operatic Society performers Beryl Evans by clicking on the link
